As 2017 comes to an end, we pause to reflect. Like the god of new beginnings, Janus, who was often depicted with two faces, the end of the year is a time to look back as well as to the future. To move forward with drive, it is a time to reflect and to celebrate our proudest achievements.
It is also a time to thank everyone who has been on the journey with us this year.
Looking back, here are some of our highlights:
RNLI + Finisterre
RNLI + Finisterre is a collaboration of which we are extremely proud. As a volunteer crew - and now helm - on the St. Agnes lifeboat, I've been part of the RNLI for more than fifteen years, so it is a cause close to my heart. Founded upon our three commitments to product, environment and people, the collection contained all the elements needed for adventures on the coast while supporting the work of the RNLI.
Vans + Finisterre
October saw the launch of Vans + Finisterre; a perfect union of our cold water heritage and Vans' unparalleled footwear knowhow. The collaboration encompassed a shared love of the sea and we were blown away by how much you loved it too.
Common Ground showcased the complete Ambassador team. For some this was the first meet, for others a welcome reunion of familiar faces. We walked far, ate well, surfed hard and lived for a while, sharing stories. We left with a further shared sense of purpose and common ground, excited to see where our paths would take us across 2017 and beyond.
The Ocean Doesn't Care
A film by Huck and Finisterre, directed by Mikey DeTemple, which follows four surfers as they flee the daily grind of New York – slipping away at dawn to find salvation in the sea.
Looking Sideways Podcast
In July, I spoke to journalist and co-Director of All Conditions Media Matt Barr, for the Looking Sideways podcast, which seeks to uncover the most interesting stories in action sports and other related endeavours. We spent the day in Brighton, went for a swim and talked about my life and Finisterre.
In the Spring we opened new look stores in St Agnes and Falmouth, and we ended the year opening a brand new store in Exeter. It was great to see so many of you at our in-store events - using these spaces to talk to our communities is something we love doing, so keep an eye out for forthcoming events in 2018.
We travelled far and wide in the pursuit of uncrowded waves in Cape Verde, the Azores, Shetland and Iceland as well as closer to home in our beautiful Cornwall, working with inspiring friends and athletes.
Here’s to a new year filled with adventure, clean lines and pushing forward. Exciting things are in the pipeline for 2018 - keep your ear to the ground for the forecast, and have a good one.
