Our Community | Bath

The solstice has passed us by and the sunshine of summer has already faded to a distant memory. But far from being the time to bundle up indoors, autumn is one of the best times to get outside.

Our stores are hubs for our community of sea-going adventure seekers, so who better to ask to find out the best outdoor experiences and micro-adventures around Bath? We sat down with Store Manager Cian, for his local autumn adventure advice.

What does the coming of autumn mean to you and your community?

The students return after having the summer off and the general tourist buzz eases off a little. The city is full of autumn colours as the trees shed their leaves and carpet the parks and pavements. Temperatures drop and you start to see people bundling up, but still enjoying the many parks and open spaces the city has to offer.

Where is a good place to find peace and reconnect to nature?

Just outside the city is Warleigh Weir, a popular swimming spot just off the river Avon. It’s a stunning little hidden gem and there are those of us brave enough to continue swimming in it over the colder months. The botanical gardens in Royal Victoria Park are also a great space to escape the city and be surrounded by nature.

What is the best place for surfing nearest your store?

Unfortunately there aren’t too many places really close by. But Llangennith, on the south coast of Wales, is one of the most popular and closest surfing spots to Bath and Bristol. For the truly invested, its either that or head down to Croyde in north Devon. With The Wave now open in Bristol, that’s another fantastic option for those that don’t want to drive out to the coast.

Where is the best place to discover wildlife in your area?

There are some stunning walks around here and the river Avon and it’s connecting canals are a great place to spot water birds and other wildlife. The Bath-Bristol railway path is another good one. It’s around 16 miles of pedestrianised former railway paths running alongside various streams, through lush countryside and woodlands.

Where is the best place for storm-watching in or around the city?

Standing at the top of the Approach golf course, looking down across the valley. You get an incredible view of the city and the surrounding hills as the weather rolls in.

What is an undiscovered or little known adventure activity that can be done close by?

You can go scuba diving at Vobster Quay which is an inland diving centre. Probably worth a mention that we do have a surf-lake close by now too, so if you don’t mind a little drive, heading over to The Wave in Bristol is a great way to get the adrenaline going.
