Without compromising quality or performance, we ask: Can it be made from organic or recycled fabrics, or can we produce it closer to the raw material source? We start by considering which fibres are not just fit for purpose but will perform best to suit the needs of the product and its intended use, offering the most durability and comfort. Then, the search begins for the lowest impact solution.

We are committed to reducing the impact of our supply chain and constantly seek to minimise the steps and processes involved in making each product. From the fibre sourcing to the packaging and labelling, we don’t believe in adding things without reason.

We take great pride in the relationship we develop with those who make our product. The Finisterre Code of Conduct sets the standards by which we build long-term partnerships with our suppliers, and carry out business through transparent and fair means.

We expect our suppliers to go beyond simply adhering to legal standards; we ensure that they also take great care to respect the wellbeing of their employees, communities and the environment in which they operate. In agreeing to our Global Sourcing Principles, they commit to extending these principles to their own employees and suppliers, too.

Choosing our Suppliers and Factories

We look for people who share our values. We believe in building relationships that last, growing with trusted suppliers, rather than jumping ship every season to save a few pennies.

Each year, and where possible each season, we visit our suppliers and factories and assess the relationship. We are continually developing our products, so from time to time we move supplier or factory to find a better solution to our current and longer-term needs. Our decisions on where to manufacture are led by the product requirements and steered by integrity. We work with carefully selected factories across Europe and Asia. We look at a variety of criteria when assessing our suppliers and factories, not least expertise – items which we are skilled in manufacturing in the UK, e.g. where we use UK wool, we make in the UK.

As our ranges include technical outerwear, we must be mindful of the latest sustainable innovations, especially weatherproof finishes and ensure we stay up to date with the latest knowledge, developing responsive fabrics e.g. FC-free DWRs, regenerated nylon and recycled polyester.

Our love of wool is central to the brand, so animal welfare is key to our sourcing decisions. We ensure that our textile selection does not negatively impact animal welfare, and so only use traceable, non-mulesed Merino and down-free insulation.

We believe that only by searching out the best people, entering into a genuine relationship with them, talking to and visiting them regularly, can we understand and trust one another and work together to craft a better product.

Our standards; upheld from the UK to the Far East

Regardless of the location, we uphold our high standards. Our Global Sourcing Principles apply to our factories and suppliers in Asia just as they apply anywhere in the world that we work; setting out standard in terms of fundamental rights as well as recommending best practices.

We understand that there are some concerns about making in Asia. These weren’t decisions we made overnight, rather years in the making. ‘Made in China’ no longer means cheap; wages have risen by more than 20% since 2010, and as anywhere in the world, there are bad factories making cheap products. However, we do not use them. The decision to make in Asia is at the forefront of sustainable innovation, allowing us to improve the quality of our product, move assembly closer to the raw materials and improve communication in the production process.

The best technical and eco fibres are being made in Asia, as is our recycled down-free insulation fill. Combine that with core components such as zips and labels which are usually made in China; it makes sense to manufacture as close to the source as possible, and thus reducing the amount of transport and therefore impact involved.
