Q: When do I need boots, gloves, and hood with my wetsuit?

Boots become necessary below 12-14°C - extremities lose heat rapidly and numb hands and feet can ruin a session, no matter how good the waves are. Gloves help below 10°C, though some surfers tolerate lower temperatures without them. Hoods are great when the water and air temperature fall below 10°C – ice cream headaches are miserable.

Q: How do I care for my wetsuit to maximise lifespan?

Rinse thoroughly with fresh water inside and out immediately after use - salt and sand degrade wetsuits. Dry on a wide hanger out of the sun. Store hanging loosely or folded, without creasing, in a cool, dry place. Never machine wash or tumble dry.

How should a wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should be snug but not restrictively tight – it’s best to swing by your local surf shop if in doubt and get the advice of the learned staff. Check for gapping, which would allow cold water to flush through, and there shouldn’t be excess material bunching behind knees or at the elbows. Remember, too loose and you defeat the purpose of wearing a wetsuit against the cold; too tight and you’ll restrict movement and find it difficult to get in and out of the suit.
