Agnes Blue: Connected By Colour

Featuring a uniquely coloured yarn exclusive to Finisterre, the tone of our new Agnes Blue knitwear was developed in partnership with our longtime spinners, Donegal Yarns. Paying homage to traditional craft, our shared cultural roots and love of the sea, here we dive into the story of how this unique colour came to be.

In the autumn of 2023, Storm Agnes swept across the UK, with the west-facing coastlines of Cornwall and Ireland facing the full force of its energy. The first named storm of the year, it brought churning seas and winds in excess of 70mph, making its presence felt for several days.

As the storm raged (sometimes you just can’t plan for these things), a small crew from our Workshop in St Agnes, Cornwall, braved the journey across the Celtic Sea, embarking on a trip to meet one of our oldest manufacturing partners.

Led by our resident Knitwear expert, Rose Savidge, the team were travelling to the west coast of Ireland to spend some time at Donegal Yarns – a traditional spinning mill who we’ve worked with for over 15 years to create the beautiful wool yarns that give our knitwear their rustic character and luxurious feel. Keeping the old ways alive, they work with ancient machinery and traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations.

An enduring relationship built on trust and a camaraderie felt between our two coastal communities, the visit helped solidify this feeling of kinship. Rose spent the time working with the spinning experts at the factory, developing a new colour for our Autumn 2025 range of knitwear – a deep blue, with multi-coloured neps that pays tribute to our shared cultural heritage and love of the sea. With the storm providing such a memorable backdrop to the trip, we named the new yarn ‘Agnes Blue’ – also a subtle reference to our Cornish cliff-top home in St Agnes.

A testament to collaboration and our shared coastal histories, our Agnes Blue knitwear consists of a Furlong roll-neck jumper for men and a Farne roll-neck for women, as well as a knitted wool beanie. Inspired by classic fishermen jumpers, the tight wool knit is warm but breathable, with the chunky rollneck adding an extra touch of warmth and comfort.
