EP 36. Lucy Small & Maddie Meddings
A Surf Film Called Ceibo
Our latest episode falls on a special date in our calendar, International Women’s Day. Understanding that Women have been under-represented within the male-dominated surf industry for too long, for the past three years we have sought to elevate female voices with our Women Of The Sea Film Fund, offering up £10,000 for budding women to tell stories of commandeering their space in the lineup. All of which leads us neatly to today’s podcast guests – Lucy Small, a surfer, journalist and activist, and longtime friend of Finisterre, Filmmaker Maddie Meddings – discussing their latest surf film project, “Ceibo”.

Lucy Small is an Australian-born surfer, journalist and increasingly vocal activist taking a bold and much needed stance on equal pay in surfing for women.
Having called out the event organisers after winning the iconic Curly Mal Jam longboard comp back in 2021, 4 years on Lucy finds herself currently ineligible to enter the prestigious Noosa Festival of Surfing, as a result of her forthright and defiant actions.
Lucy’s Filmmaking collaborator and a longstanding friend of Finisterre, Maddie Meddings is a filmmaker and photographer emblematic of the rising crop of female surf talent in the UK scene. Ceibo, her second project with Lucy, continues her passion for telling the lesser-known stories from within the surfing world. The film is a beautiful depiction of how we must protect what we love, while highlighting the important role of women within this complex ecosystem as guardians of nature.
