Ali Carrier

Freediver, surfer and marine scientist, Ali Carrier is a positive force above and below the waves – working to diversify the lineups around Vancouver Island and helping local fisheries to manage their stocks responsibly.

Originally from Quebec City in Eastern Canada, Ali first moved to Vancouver Island to study the impact of harbour seals on hatchery salmon – eventually turning her research into a full-time marine stewardship role working closely with the Toquaht First Nation Government fisheries department.

She’s also incredibly passionate about her work with Rising Tide, Canada's Indigenous youth surf club, and wants to see more diversity in the lineups around the island, as well as one day bringing the same level of free instruction around freediving and harvesting from the water. Helping local youth connect with these natural environments and teaching them how to harness and appreciate their abundance.

“Diversification of the line-up feels good for everyone. Even for white, privileged people, it will feel good. There is more room for inclusivity and not just skin colour, but the different body shapes, styles of surfing, and surfboards too.”
