Falmouth Microadventures

I grew up in South Wales and have always had a love for the ocean and being outdoors. Being so close to the beaches and mountains from a young age gave me a curiosity for the natural world that I have carried with me into my adult life. I heard about Finisterre a few years ago on a podcast and the commitment to sustainability and the environment really resonated with me.

When I saw the opportunity to join the brand in Falmouth, I was really excited to be involved with a brand that both cares about the environment and share’s my passion connecting with the outdoors.

Sheltered from the majority of the Atlantic swell rolling in and hitting the rest of the Cornish coast, the beaches of Falmouth are often calm and still, perfect for exploring the many coves and natural reefs lining the coast. And there isn’t a better way to explore the beaches of Gylly and Swanpool than being on the water.

Right on our doorstep, WeSUP are open all year round and provide tours, rentals and lessons. Stand up paddleboard or kayak tours of the surrounding area take you across the crystal clear waters to explore caves and to encounter the abundant wildlife. Whether you’re a complete beginner or just wanting to improve, lessons are tailored to you. If you just want to head out on your own adventure, WeSUP can provide the equipment and set you off to explore. Situated right on Gylly Beach, you can’t miss their cabin right next to Gylly Beach Cafe. Suitable for anyone, regardless of age or fitness levels, WeSUP are all about inclusivity and you won’t find anyone else more knowledgeable of the Falmouth coastline.

Close to town, but just far away enough to escape the crowds, the walk around Pendennis Point offers an easy hike with views of the harbour and dockyards, as well as across to St Mawes. Along the way are a few little hidden coves, perfect spots for a swim, and regardless of the wind direction, you’ll always be able to find a sheltered spot. After following the trail that hugs the estuary, standing guard over Falmouth and the entrance to the Fal River is Pendennis Castle, built by Henry VIII back in the 16th century. Entrance fees apply to walk around the castle grounds, but if you just want the expansive views around Falmouth, walk to the headland to see all the way across to the Lizard peninsula to the south and the Roseland and St Anthony Head Lighthouse to the east.

Pendennis Point not only gives a 360 degree view of Falmouth and the surrounding area, but the vantage point is a great chance to spot marine life. Seals, dolphins, seabirds and the odd whale frequent this spot year round, with a small number of seals regularly lazing around on Black Rock, halfway across the entrance to Falmouth Harbour.

Starting at Maenporth Beach, leave the car and head south along the coastal path by foot where you’ll come across some of the most beautiful beaches and coves in the area. Rugged coastline and grassy fields where cows idly graze, the Helford River is quintessential Cornwall. Countless beaches and coves along the way, both stony and sandy, offer up good alternatives to Gylly and Swanpool in the busier periods. The waters around here are clear and calm, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

Continuing the path you’ll eventually pass through the small village of Durgan before coming across the Ferry Boat Inn, a good place to stop for a drink or some food overlooking the river as the boats pass by. A passenger ferry can take you across the river to the village of Helford and the continuation of the South West Coast Path.
