Waiting For Fish

Waiting for Fish... initially started as a small sketch inspired by a man (called Dave) and Bird who I saw in Cadgwith looking out to sea waiting for the local fishermen to come in.

The sketch has evolved into a life size sculpture project which aims to highlight the importance of small boat fishing in Cornwall, hopefully posing the question of where our fish comes from and to raise awareness about the impacts of overfishing on our incredible marine life.

After first exhibiting them at Holan’s pop up gallery in St Ives last summer, my friend and photographer Cat Vinton and I decided to take Dave & Bird out to watch the sunrise on the rocks, the response from the public interacting with him that morning was honestly overwhelming with everyone asking if he was going to stay.

Tanya Noble (Director of Porthleven Arts Community) reached out to me and asked if Dave and Bird would be the main feature of their Arts Festival this September, I went for a meeting with her and Trevor Osborne (Owner of the Harbour and Dock Company) and he asked if Dave and Bird would like to live in Porthleven Harbour permanently installed on the Pill Box looking out to sea, next to the old lifeboat station.

He has offered to repair the site and make a safer access ready for the sculpture if I can raise the funds to get them cast into Bronze - as they’re currently made in plaster and are too fragile. It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity for them to be a free and accessible public sculpture with the environmental message behind the piece on a plaque next to them.

I’ve launched a Crowdfunder to hopefully raise the money by the end of May. It's a not-for-profit and all or nothing campaign so if we don’t hit the target everyone will get their money back. Any support towards this project would be hugely appreciated.
