Surfing Equipment List:
An Essential Checklist

Having the right surfing gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience, whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out. The right equipment can significantly impact your performance, comfort, and overall enjoyment of the sport. We’ve been building high-quality gear and apparel for surfers for over 20 years, so we put together this handy list to walk you through the essentials you’ll need on your checklist.

Essential Surfing Gear for Beginners

With so much gear out there, it can be confusing as a beginner to know what surf equipment you actually need to get started. Here's a breakdown of the essential gear you'll need to start your surfing journey:

Surfboard

You can’t go surfing without a surfboard! And the board you pick will be with you for a while as you learn the ropes. As a beginner it’s recommended to start with a larger soft-top board that provides stability and ease of paddling. The size will vary depending on the size of the surfer, but most beginners usually get started on an 8-9 ft foam surfboard. This also minimises the risk of injury if the beginner loses control of the board.

Wetsuit

Whilst in Hawaii or California you can surf in swimwear for most of the year, in the UK, a wetsuit is essential for keeping warm in colder water temperatures. Consider factors like water temperature, your tolerance to cold, and the type of surfing you'll be doing when choosing a wetsuit thickness.

Finisterre offers a range of Men's Wetsuits and Women's Wetsuits to suit different needs and preferences.

Nieuwland 3.5/2.5mm Yulex® Back Zip Wetsuit: This versatile wetsuit is perfect for beginners, offering warmth and flexibility, with a back-zip to make it easier to get on and off.

Swimwear for Under Wetsuit

Some people find wearing swimwear under their wetsuit can help prevent chafing and make it easier to put on and take off your wetsuit. Explore our range of men’s and women’s swimwear to find the right option for you.

Rash Guards

Rash guards protect your skin from sunburn, rashes, and jellyfish stings.

Surfboard Leash

A surfboard leash attaches your ankle to your surfboard, preventing it from floating away if you wipe out.

Surf Wax
