Can You Wash a Wetsuit?
Many people believe that you shouldn't wash your wetsuit because it will damage it. However, this is a misconception. Washing your wetsuit regularly is crucial to remove salt, sand, and other contaminants that can degrade the Yulex material and cause unpleasant odours.
How to Wash a Wetsuit: Step-by-Step Guide
Essential Tools for Wetsuit Cleaning
- Mild detergent
- Fresh water
- Soft-bristled brush
- Hanger or drying rack
Steps for Hand Washing a Wetsuit
- Rinse thoroughly: You should do this after each use, rinsing your wetsuit with fresh water to remove any salt or sand.
- Soak in mild detergent: Fill a bathtub or large basin with warm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Soak your wetsuit for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Scrub gently: Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away any dirt or grime. Pay particular attention to areas that tend to accumulate salt, such as the armpits, crotch, and cuffs.
- Rinse thoroughly: Rinse your wetsuit thoroughly with fresh water to remove any remaining detergent.
- Hang to dry: Hang your wetsuit upside down on a hanger or drying rack in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can degrade the Yulex.

Can You Put a Wetsuit in the Washing Machine?
Basically, no. While it's sometimes possible to machine wash a wetsuit, it's not something we would recommend or advocate for. Machine washing can be too harsh on the Yulex material and can damage the seams, so we would always recommend hand washing your wetsuit for optimal care.
How to Dry a Wetsuit Safely
- Hang in half by the waist: This prevents stress on the seams and stretching of the shoulders whilst allowing the wetsuit to drip dry.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Direct sunlight can degrade the Yulex and cause the colours to fade.
- Allow to air dry completely: Do not speed up the drying process by using a dryer or heat lamps.
How to Care for Your Wetsuit
- Rinse after each use: This is the most important step in caring for your wetsuit.
- Store properly: When storing your wetsuit, hang it up by the waist in a well-ventilated area. Avoid storing it in a damp or musty place.
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use bleach or fabric softener on your wetsuit.
- Consider a wetsuit storage bag: A wetsuit storage bag can help to protect your suit from damage and keep it organised.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your wetsuit remains in excellent condition and provides you with years of waves.
