NetPlus®

We’ve always sought solutions that reduce our impact on the environment and build on what’s gone before. An innovative recycled yarn made of 100% traceable, discarded fishing nets, we introduced NetPlus® to our outerwear range in 2024 – getting you out in nature whilst helping to reduce harmful ocean plastic pollution.

Bureo, the company behind NetPlus®, is on a mission to end fishing net pollution and protect our ocean through community empowerment, by creating a positive solution for end-of-life nets.

Headquartered in Oxnard, California, and Talcahuano, Chile, Bureo works directly with fishing communities around the world to collect, sort, clean, shred, and recycle discarded fishing nets into NetPlus® material. They then partner with industry-leading brands to incorporate NetPlus® material into their products – from fabrics made with recycled nylon to hat brims made from recycled HDPE.

How is NetPlus® Different?

Not all recycling is equal. Bureo takes pride in the high-quality of their recycled product and an unwavering commitment to transparency. NetPlus® material is made from post-consumer recycled fishing nets sourced from fisheries around the world. Their fully transparent supply chain is third-party audited and certified for material traceability – tracking materials from net collection through to recycling.

Discarded nets are one of the most harmful forms of ocean plastic pollution and the infrastructure that Bureo has created to recycle the nets is essential in helping to reduce this. It creates a positive solution for these end-of-life nets, that protects marine ecosystems and empowers fishing communities to protect their local waters.

Turning Old Nets Into NetPlus® Fabric

1) Collecting - Discarded nets are sourced from fishing communities around the world through an incentivised recycling program.

2) Processing - Nets are sorted, cleaned, shredded, and packed at Bureo facilities before heading to Bureo's recycling partners.

3) Recycling - Through an advanced depolymerisation process, nets are broken down and reformed into NetPlus® nylon pellets.

4) Spinning - NetPlus® nylon pellets are extruded into high-quality yarns ready to be woven into a range of performance fabrics.

5) Innovating - Fabrics made with NetPlus® nylon meet rigorous standards to ensure durability and performance for brand partners.

6) Empowering - The NetPlus® recycling program supports cleaner and stronger coastal communities with employment, non-profit funding, and improved waste infrastructure.

Impact Reductions: NetPlus® vs virgin nylon

So, just how much of an improvement is NetPlus® on traditional virgin polymers? To answer these questions, Bureo has completed an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis*) comparing NetPlus® nylon with virgin nylon, giving the following results:

Greenhouse gas: 20% reduction

Water consumption: 70% reduction

Fossil fuels: 67% reduction

Energy consumption: 68% reduction
